05Where it comes from

Seven districts. Three of them aspirational.

Sourcing is contracted with Self-Help Groups and village producer collectives, often before the crop goes in the ground.

06How the sourcing works

Three decisions that each cost us something and buy back traceability.

01

Contracted ahead of sowing

Where we can, the price is fixed before the seed goes in the ground. A grower who knows the price in advance can plan. One who finds out at harvest takes whatever the market decided in the meantime.

02

Graded in the village

Sorting, weighing and labelling happen before the produce leaves, while the people responsible for it are still standing next to it. Slower than a machine, and the only reason a lot stays traceable.

03

Kept to a single mill

Rice usually loses its history in the milling stage, where lots are blended for volume. Keeping a lot to one mill costs throughput and buys back the origin.
