01The belt
Kandhamal sits in the Eastern Ghats: upland, forested, rainfed, and classified an aspirational district. It is the origin of the Kalajeera rice the brand was built around, and it was the first belt we sourced from.
It is also where the Madhyam Foundation programme operates. The pattern there is the one we keep finding: groups trained thoroughly in how to produce, and left without anyone to sell to. The programme pairs the training with the market access, because on its own the training had already been done.
Turmeric and native mango come out of the same district, the mango only for as long as the season allows.
